Many of the problems your child might have with his or her teeth will make themselves known, and if they’re caught early, those problems can be treated long before they become serious. Here are a few reasons why it’s so important to pay close attention to your child’s teeth:
Your child’s enamel isn’t as strong as yours
The enamel on your child’s teeth is 50% thinner than the enamel on your teeth. That means sugar can attack more easily and lead more quickly to cavities. Your dentist can usually stop small cavities from developing into big problems, and you can help at home, too.
Kids are good at lots of things, brushing their teeth isn’t always one of them
Your child’s healthy teeth depend on proper brushing, and this starts with you. Set a good example with your own oral care routine, and try to make brushing fun for them. Be a good teacher, but always check their work! In addition, using fluoride toothpaste can help their teeth to remineralize, which can help prevent cavities by replacing lost minerals in the enamel. A healthy diet is also important to healthy teeth – along with regular dentist visits.
Thumb sucking actually is harmful
This is a tough habit to break, but it’s important to try and stop because thumb sucking. It puts pressure on tiny teeth, pushing them forward, which can lead to braces and even tooth removal. You will need to pay close attention because often children don’t even realize their sucking their thumbs. Alert your child every time they start to pop their thumb into their mouth, and we can tell you about various strategies to help stop the behavior, depending on age.
