Sometimes people underestimate pediatric dentists. They think all they need to do is have a few toys in a corner, paint the walls some bright primary colors, and have Dora the Explorer playing on a TV and, voila, I’m a pediatric dentist.
The reality is far different. Just as most people don’t think pediatricians are the same as family general practitioners, pediatric dentists are different from regular dentists.
What is Pediatric Dentistry?
Pediatric dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of young people. To become a pediatric dentist, a person has to complete an additional two to three years of extra training. This comes AFTER the normal four-year dental school curriculum is finished.
What do they study?
Why the extra two to three years? Pediatric dentists follow a specialized program that combines both study and hands-on experience. The curriculum prepares pediatric dentists to meet the unique dental needs of infants, children, and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs. This is on top of the adult dental training they have already received.
