While your child is growing up, it can be so easy to get caught up in his development and forget about monitoring the condition of his teeth. While you can be health conscious about your child’s teeth by requiring him to stick to the oral hygiene routine you’ve created for him, there could still be more that’s going on in your child’s mouth than just simple plaque and stuck food debris. This makes it important for your child to have a comprehensive oral exam as soon as possible.
Why does your child need it?
Regular visits to the dentist can help in the protection of your child’s oral health. These dental examinations can be an opportunity for your child’s dentist to detect any oral problems as early as possible and provide immediate treatment. A comprehensive oral exam does not just detect any problems in your child’s teeth, but this could also help you take care of your child’s dental health a lot better through tips and instructions given by the dentist.
When can my child have a dental exam?
The frequency of your child’s dental exams depends on various conditions, including his age or his risk for tooth decay. It is important to have this discussed with your dentist, yet the general guidelines are as follows:
- Ages 6 months to a year. It is recommended to have a child’s first dental exam when the first tooth has already erupted and not much later than his first birthday.
- Toddlers to adolescents. Dental checkups are recommended every six months, but could depend on the oral health of your child.
