Children do not have a clue yet of what it is like to visit a dentist except that it is a real traumatizing experience they would rather not go to. This perception of the dentist can have a negative effect on your kid, as he or she might not get the dental care and treatment needed. You do not have to let fear of dental visits creep up on your child. As early as possible, make dental visits and the dentist a fun, enjoyable experience!

Everything starts at home.

First things first, make sure that you keep your child’s teeth healthy and cavity-free by teaching good oral hygiene at home. Teach your child the proper way of brushing and impose the importance of keeping teeth clean and healthy. It would help if your child’s first trip to the dentist will not be because of tooth decay.

Choose the right dentist.

Of course, the dentist affects your child’s perception of dental visits a lot. Not all dentists are trained to treat dental conditions in children, which is why choosing a pediatric dentist for your kid is the right thing to do. A family dentist will also be able to monitor your child’s dental health into his or her adulthood.

Stay positive yet honest.

A child’s fears of the dentist can arise from adults’ personal traumatic experiences during their own dental appointments. When talking to your child about the dentist, keep everything positive, yet you have to stay honest at all costs. Fooling or tricking your child into going to the dentist will do no good as he or she may react badly once reality sets in. It would be better to tell them the truth on what to expect during their first dental visit to help them prepare for it ahead of time.
